Preventing Heart Attacks and Death in Patients with Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease
Blood Pressure Control2
Blood pressure should be measured in all adults during every routine visit to a physician. To help control blood pressure, lifestyle modification such as weight control, physical activity, alcohol moderation, moderate sodium restriction and an emphasis on fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products should be stressed in all patients with blood pressure & > ; 130 mm Hg systolic or 80 mm Hg diastolic.
If a patient's blood pressure is not < 140 mm Hg systolic or 90 mm Hg diastolic; or if blood pressure is not < 130 mm Hg systolic or 85 mm Hg diastolic for individuals with heart failure or renal insufficiency (< 80 mm Hg diastolic for patients with diabetes), blood pressure medication should be prescribed and individualized to other patient requirements and characteristics such as age, race, and need for drugs with specific benefits.
