Risk Factors for Heart Disease and Heart Attack

It's important for you to know whether you are at increased risk for heart disease. Even if you already have heart disease, there are actions that you and your doctor can take to protect the health of your heart.

One way doctors can estimate your risk of developing heart disease is by evaluating “risk factors” – aspects of your family history, behaviors and habits, and current health status that can affect your heart. The more risk factors a person has, the higher the likelihood that he or she will develop heart disease.1

In general, there are two types of risk factors: those you (with the help of your doctor) can change, known as modifiable risk factors; and those that you can’t change, known as unmodifiable risk factors.1 Click on the subject below to learn more:
